Company Overview

Founded in 1963, Yachiyo Engineering Co., Ltd. is an engineering consultant that has provided engineering and knowledge-based services for social infrastructure development both in Japan and overseas. Drawing on the natural-science expertise and the planning and design capabilities we have cultivated over many years in the fields of rivers and water resources, we apply this knowledge to corporate sustainability management, delivering practical solutions to environmental challenges such as climate change, water risk, and biodiversity.
Climate Change Impacts
As climate change advances, water risks that directly affect business operations are emerging around the world, including severe floods and droughts, the uneven distribution of water resources, and changes in water quality. In the manufacturing sector in particular, when facilities or the production sites of raw materials are located in watersheds with high water risk, the consequences—operational shutdowns due to water-intake restrictions, flood damage to equipment, and supply-chain disruptions—can seriously affect business continuity and financial performance. Adapting to these risks has become a management priority not only for leading companies but for businesses of every kind.
Adaptation Initiatives
In 2018, we launched the “Water Risk Lab” to help address the water-related challenges companies face (Fig. 1). We have since developed that expertise into “Sustainability Navi” (Fig. 2), a consulting service centered on water risk that supports clients end to end—from research and analysis through to implementation.
From the standpoint of climate change adaptation, what we value most is precise water-risk assessment at the “watershed” level. Simple screening using global-scale assessment tools alone often produces results that diverge from on-the-ground realities. Taking into account the delineation of watershed boundaries, the effects of water conveyance, environmental standards specific to each country and region, hazard maps, and other factors, we assess water-shortage, water-quality, and flood risks at each site with a high degree of precision. By visualizing—in a clearly explainable form—why a given site matters and which risks are financially most significant, we support investment decisions and help build internal consensus.
We identify the gap between the healthy state of a watershed and its current condition, design realistic, site-specific water targets on that basis, and provide integrated support spanning both structural measures, such as installing flood barriers and raising ground levels, and non-structural measures, such as BCP and water-source management programs.
Our principal services are as follows.

Effects/ Expected Benefits
In climate change adaptation, the “implementation” phase—translating assessment results into concrete measures and investments—is decisively important. By combining specialized natural-science expertise with the planning and design capabilities cultivated through public infrastructure work, we provide seamless support across the full cycle of assessing the current situation, formulating strategy, and carrying it out—aiming to strengthen corporate resilience and contribute to sustained, medium- to long-term corporate value.
