Adaptation Initiatives
Production of coffee is getting effects of climate change such as increases in temperature or humidity and changes in rainfall patterns and rainfall rate. It is warned that 50% of the land currently suitable for Arabica coffee production will no longer be suitable by 2050 if the production is continued to be affected by climate change.
Key Coffee Inc. is working on the International Multi-Location Variety Trial (IMLVT) in collaboration with a global research organization World Coffee Research. The IMLVT is a project to select the best-performing varieties with tolerance to climate change effects and diseases / pests combined with richness and fullness of flavor by growing and evaluating the world’s top-performing coffee varieties in test sites around the world. The company is working together with the research trial and provides a part of its own farm at Toraja, Sulawesi Island, Indonesia as trial sites.
After evaluating the trial and finding the best-performing varieties, they share the knowledge and techniques with the local community. Increases in coffee yields and improvement in coffee qualities are expected, thus improvement in producers’ profitability is also expected. Above all, the consumers are able to continuously enjoy good coffee. To achieve the sustainable cycle, Key Coffee Inc. is working on the variety trial as one of its centennial-anniversary projects.
