Ibaraki Local Climate Change Adaptation Center Establishment Memorial Symposium

With the enactment of the Climate Change Adaptation Law in December 2018, Ibaraki Prefecture established the Ibaraki Local Climate Change Adaptation Center at Ibaraki University in April 2019. A symposium commemorating its establishment was held on June 28, bringing together approximately 100 local government officials, researchers, and media representatives.

At the symposium, President Nobuo Mimura of Ibaraki University, a leading expert on climate change adaptation research in Japan, gave a lecture on global trends in climate change adaptation and the background to the implementation of the Adaptation Act in Japan. In addition, Dr. Hiromune Yokoki, Director of the Ibaraki Prefectural Local Climate Change Adaptation Center, gave a lecture on the organizational structure and business concept of the Ibaraki Prefectural Local Climate Change Adaptation Center. In the panel discussion, Mr. Ooi, Director, Office of Climate Change Adaptation, Ministry of the Environment, and Mr. Mukai, Director, Center for Climate Change Adaptation, National Institute for Environmental Studies, took the stage for a lively discussion on climate change impacts and adaptation in Ibaraki. As Japan's first local climate change adaptation center to be established by a university institution, the center aims to promote adaptation in the region based on the co-evolution of cross-faculty research and education on climate change.
