Adaptation activity
The 2008 "Nagoya 2050 Water Cycle Restoration Strategy" was created in response to various issues affecting the water cycle caused by urbanization. It aims to restore the natural function of the water cycle while increasing the sustainability of human activity, and to promote Nagoya as an environmentally-friendly city supported by a healthy water cycle.
The strategy aims to restore a sound hydrological cycle through the use of permeable road surfaces that allow increased infiltration and storage of rainwater. This can also help with the control of rainwater runoff. The increasing risk of flooding caused by torrential rain events, when rainfall on city streets exceeds their runoff capacity, can also be mitigated. An additional goal of the strategy is to increase public and corporate understanding of the water cycle issue through awareness-raising projects.
