The GoodBerry project for Berry Breeding

Publication date January 16, 2019
Sector Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries
Region name Overseas(Europe・EU)

Climate change impacts

Berry seeds, for strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries etc., are weakened by climate change, resulting in reduced productivity. However, since consumption is increasing, it is necessary to increase production.

Adaptation activity

The GoodBerry project was launched in 2016 as a four-year project funded by the European Union. The project is designed to provide data on increasing productivity and improving the quality of berry species (Fig.). Specifically, the project aims to: ①identify genetic resources in the EU that balance productivity and nutritional value; ②develop innovative production processes and breeding strategies that can maintain high productivity in different European environments; and ③develop standardized analytical tools to evaluate the production and quality of berry species in sub-optimal cultivation environments.

Outputs / Expected benefits

This project aims to foster the latest breeding techniques. It is expected that EU berry producers will adopt these production systems to improve the competitiveness of berry production in Europe.
