Climate change impacts
For some regions climate change is beneficial to agriculture, however, even in these regions, small farm are less likely to benefit. Rapid adaptation is essential in areas where climate change is causing environmental issues. Agribusinesses, in particular, need to adapt to new environments as soon as possible.
Adaptation activity
Based on the estimation that 70% of future climates will be similar to some regions as they are today, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) developed a research programme called Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS). One of the tools it developed was "Climate Analogues" (Fig. 1). This enables the identification of regions that currently have climates similar to the future climates of a particular region (Fig. 2). Agricultural workers, researchers, and policymakers are able to develop strategies and technologies from these currently existing climates and establish how regions adapt or fail.
Outputs / Expected benefits
Contrasting current farming practices to analogous practices in the future will facilitate an exchange of skills among farmers in different regions, and promote the trial and demonstration of adaptation strategies and technologies.
