Based on our corporate philosophy of pursuing the best solutions for securing, purifying, and circulating the limited water resources that are indispensable for our daily lives, and preserving a sustainable global environment, we are developing as a company that can contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through our activities to protect human health and pursue safety and security of life through our business within and outside Japan.

Climate Change Impacts

Water scarcity and water contamination/pollution, frequently caused by climate change, threaten local water resources, which hinder the livelihood and industrial development of the residents.

Adaptation Initiatives

SANICON Co., Ltd. and our group company ACCRETE Co., Ltd., have delivered a water purification treatment facility to a hotel in Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam, and have been providing technical cooperation. The following is a summary of the process of this initiative.

The relationship between Sakai City and Binh Dinh Province in Vietnam has been established over many years through the Vietnamese Consulate General in Osaka, with interactions of local companies and personnel between the two countries. When Binh Dinh Province sent a delegation to Japan, they observed the water treatment facilities and septic tank facilities planned, designed, constructed, and maintained by SANICON and ACCRETE. Since then, we started to teach how to the maintain and manage the water/wastewater treatment facilities in Binh Dinh Province.

One of the leading companies in Binh Dinh's growing tourism industry, CONSTRUCTION JOINT STOCK COMPANY 47 (CC47), wanted to ensure a safe water supply for its hotels. T started a project to purify the well water in the hotels to drinking water level, and requested for our technical support. Combining SANICON’s expertise in water supply and ACCRETE's water purification technology, a well water purification and treatment facility was installed at CC47's Seagull Hotel in May 2017 (Figures 1 and 2). This facility (Note 1) is capable of removing bacteria and viruses. In addition to the fact that 95% of the filtered water can be reused, the facility has advantages suitable for use in developing countries, such as low power consumption of the pump and the durability for long-term use. In addition, the filtration membranes in this facility can retain hardness and ions at safe levels, thus preserving the flavor of the local water.

Upon delivery of the equipment, we also provided guidance on installation and maintenance management. We taught the Japanese technical standards and methods for all the procedures from installation to regular maintenance and management (Note 2), and realized a safe and sustainable water supply.

Subsequently, SANICON Binh Dinh Vietnam was established and engineers were dispatched from Japan on a regular basis to promote sales and provide technical guidance to the local community for water supply projects (Figure 3).

Effects / Expected Benefits

The installation of this well water purification treatment facility has provided safe and reliable water for tourists, which is helping the local economy on its way to sustainable development in the future. Based on this case study, the local government has begun to consider the use of the water purification system for general hospitals and schools.

Footnote
(Note 1) The water treatment facility uses UF (ultrafiltration) membranes, which are capable of removing bacteria and viruses. The cross-flow filtration method is used to create a flow that is parallel to the surface of the membranes, and controlling the suspended solids and colloids from accumulating on the surface of the membranes.
(Note 2) "Procedures from installation to regular maintenance and management" include organizing the area around the water purification system and water supply system facilities, opening and closing the lids, and coating the inside of the existing water tanks and elevated water tanks with resin.
