Toyox Co., Ltd. was founded in 1963. It develops, manufactures, and sells wide lineup of pressure-resistant vinyl hoses and couplings. The hoses and couplings are for many different applications in which fluids need to be transported. Industrial uses of the houses are for such as in-plant hoses and mechanical equipment, and household uses are for such as a bath shower and watering for gardening. Toyox also offers diverse kinds of products such as radiant heating and cooling systems, energy-saving systems, systems of efficient installation of hoses, office automation equipment, and software.

Adaptation Initiatives

The Toyox’s head office factory located in Kurobe-city, Toyama Prefecture, Japan, is vulnerable to heavy rainfall because the site location is surrounded by rivers on three sides. The factory had flooding caused by the heavy rain in 1985. Because of climate change, the scale and frequency of river flooding caused by typhoons or heavy rains may increase in the future. For these reasons, Toyox is working especially for flood resistance and resilience along other measures in its business continuity plan (BCP).

The factory is prepared with a range of measures against flooding. One of the measures is monitoring rainfall (Fig. 1). If the rain gauge detects the rainfall of 30 mm per hour, it automatically gives the 1st warning email, and the 2nd warning is for the rainfall of 50 mm per hour. The company performs operation tests of the rain gauge every month.

The other measures Toyox is implementing are such as monitoring the river water level, the protection of significant facilities (lifting electronic equipment or installing electricity receiving equipment at a high place at the time of updating), protection of products and the warehouse (installing water stop plates with a height of 70 cm), and practical training (handling of drainage pump and emergency-call training) (Fig. 2). The factory is conducting practical training periodically to be able to handle those measures. In addition, the latest addition of measure is preparing emergency goods to protect employees at the time of disasters, such as food, drinking water, emergency toilets, blankets, radio, and Personal Handy-phone System (PHS).

By taking the measures in advance, the company is enhancing its resistance and resilience to flooding, leading to its stable supply of products to customers. Because Toyox is highly regarded by customers for its punctuality on supply of products, it emphasizes countermeasures against flooding on its BCP. Toyox continues working for adaptation measures to keep the trust from its clients, ensure safety of employees and their families, and contribute to the community and society.
