Company Overview
The Tokyu Group consists of 222 companies and 5 corporations, and operates a variety of businesses that support people's daily lives in the four business domains of "transportation”, “real estate”, “lifestyle services”, and “hotels and resorts” (as of March 31, 2023). Since its establishment, the company has been working to solve social issues through "urban development" based on its railroad business, and is based on "sustainable management," which is a sustainable approach to solving social issues.
Climate Change Impacts
In recent years, climate change has caused severe flooding and landslides due to torrential rains and typhoons to occur frequently. Typhoon No.19 in October 2019 caused partial flooding damage to a nursing home operated by the Tokyu Group.
Adaptation Initiatives
The Group is taking steps to continue its business and protect the community in the event of a disaster caused by climate change or other factors.
For example, Tokyu Bell provides delivery services of groceries and daily necessities to households. To prepare for large-scale disasters on a regular basis, the company has established a system for cooperation with local police to prepare for disasters and conducts "assume the unexpected" drills. Tokyu Property Management Corporation, which operates and manages buildings, has established the BC Research Center (BC: Business Continuity), an in-house organization dedicated to business continuity and is proactively making BCP proposals to clients as part of its contingency preparedness (Fig. 1).
In October 2019, Typhoon No. 19 hit a private-pay nursing home operated by the Group, flooding the first floor and causing power outage, forcing residents and staff to evacuate to the upper floors. The kitchen and electrical facilities on the first floor were flooded, making it impossible to serve meals to residents, and the lack of lighting made it difficult to care for residents. The nursing home operator requested assistance from Tokyu Bell and was able to provide meals prepared in cooperation with neighboring facilities within the same day.
Tokyu Property Management Co., Ltd. was in charge of restoring the electrical facilities. Since the equipment on the first floor of the nursing home had been destroyed, it was dark inside the building even during the daytime. So the first priority was to restore the lighting, and “provide safety and peace of mind to the residents”.
On October 23, 2019, the “BC FACT BOOK” was published to internally and externally publicize the various business continuity activities being conducted by the Group (Fig. 2).
Effects / Expected Benefits
The Group will continue to promote "sustainable community development for a new era" not only through efforts to enable business recovery and continuity in the event of major disasters, but also by actively addressing local issues such as measures for people who have difficulty returning home, and by collaborating with various local governments and private businesses.
