Climate Change Feelings for You Vol. 2 Eco-Life Fair 2018

Date of the meeting June 2-3, 2018
Venue Tokyo/Shibuya Ward

"~Climate change you feel ~here!? Japan Islands"

The Eco-Life Fair 2018, held in Yoyogi Park from June 2 to June 3, was exhibited jointly by the Social Environment Systems Research Center and the Climate Change Strategic Coordination Office.

In order to make visitors more familiar with adaptation to climate change and its impacts, we introduced climate change, mitigation measures, and adaptation measures using story-style exhibits.

The questionnaire board "~Climate Change You Feel~Here is Hen!? The Japanese Islands" was also carried out, and the seal was put on one of the items that I realize to be "Hen" on a daily basis among (spring) cherry blossom blossom bloom, (summer) summer heat, (autumn) rainfall, typhoon, and (winter) snowfall.

Over two days, more than 500 people participated. Compared with the results of the Eco-Life Fair last year (Fig. 1), this year the "summer heat" and "snow fall" decreased, while the "cherry blossom blossom" and "rain and typhoon" increased by 1.8 points and 2.7 points, respectively.

This may be because cherry blossoms bloomed about a week earlier this year, or because local heavy rains and local torrential rains are increasingly talked about.

A paper questionnaire was also conducted to examine awareness of adaptation to global warming and climate change impacts.
Despite being troublesome compared to the questionnaire board, the number of responses to the questionnaire was 752! Thank you for your cooperation.

Looking at the results of the three questions (Fig. 2 and Fig. 3): "Q1. Have you been interested in the Earth and the environment?" "Q2. Have you ever heard the word "global warming?" "Q3. Have you been aware of the word "adaptation" to climate change?", we can see that the degree of awareness and interest in "adaptation" to climate change are still lower than those of the Earth, the environment, and global warming.

On the other hand, approximately half of the participants learned that they are "adapting to climate change," and a little less than 10% of them learned that they are "already acting" (Fig. 3).

Television and newspapers are the main information media, followed by the Internet, books, and magazines. We also learned from the radio (Fig. 4).

Q3のグラフ

"Q4. Do you want to act on adaptation in the future?" means that more than 80% of respondents were more positive about acting on adaptation to the impacts of climate change, and while not yet known, less than 10% said that they wanted to learn a little more (Fig. 5).

It is considered that those in their 20s, which account for 20% of the respondent age group, are the next generation who grow in the midst of climate change, and those in their 30s or older are the generations who have lived while feeling climate change (Fig. 6).

Q4のグラフ

This questionnaire helps to deepen our understanding of adaptation to climate change impacts and make it available to those who are acting on it.
We will continue to disseminate information from A-PLAT. Thank you for your cooperation in the questionnaire board and questionnaire survey.
