Second Regional Meeting to Exchange Opinions on Climate Change Adaptation

Date of the meeting November 22, 2019
Venue Tokyo

In order to promote regional climate change adaptation, we held the Second Community Meeting to Exchange Opinions on Climate Change Adaptation in the Region.

This fiscal year, 100 people from local governments in prefectures and ordinance-designated cities all over Japan participated in the theme of the Local Climate Change Adaptation Center, and 13 organizations of the Local Climate Change Adaptation Center gave lectures on the background of the establishment and organizational structures and activities. National Institute for Environmental Studies Climate Change Adaptation Centre also explained 49 regional support measures.

In the afternoon, local adaptation centers participated as advisors, and discussions were held in 10 groups. The first half discussed preparations before the establishment of regional adaptation centers, and the second half discussed activities after the establishment of regional adaptation centers. Specifically, the participants discussed the roles required of regional adaptation centers, the necessary preparations and issues for their establishment, measures to gain the understanding of other departments and senior management, and the content of activities to realize them.

The Group announcements identified the need for easy-to-understand information dissemination as a role of regional adaptation centers, unification of contact points on climate change, improvement of awareness including other departments and senior management, and adequate measures against impacts of climate change. In addition, we received many requests for National Institute for Environmental Studies, such as strengthening cooperation with relevant ministries and agencies, technical advice on future impacts, human resource development, and assigning staff to each region.

Following the enactment of the Climate Change Adaptation Law last year, we will continue to build networks with regional adaptation centers and adapters, while strengthening support for regional adaptation promotion. Thank you very much to everyone who participated.
