The 4th Symposium on Promoting Climate Change Adaptation by Private Sector - Towards Addressing Physical Risks in TCFD - was co-hosted by the Ministry of the Environment and the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) with the aim of promoting adaptation by businesses. The symposium consisted of three parts: the first part covered the latest scientific findings on climate change impacts and adaptation, the second part covered the trends of national efforts related to TCFD, and the third In the second part, the trends of national efforts related to TCFD, and in the third part, examples of TCFD efforts by private companies were presented.

The original plan was to have 200 participants, but due to the large number of applications, we decided to increase the number of participants to 500. In addition, about 154 people responded to the post-event questionnaire. The following is a summary of each program and some of the results of the questionnaire.

[Figure 1: Impressions of Part 1] shows the impressions of the first part of the program from 146 participants. 98% of the respondents answered that the program was helpful. [98% of the respondents found the program useful, and some of their comments are shown below.

Figure 1: Impressions of Part 1 Comments from the participants of Part 1
  • We were able to understand the efforts and characteristics of each ministry and agency, which was useful as a guideline for future activities.
  • We were able to confirm that there are tools that companies can also use to address climate change.
  • I was able to understand the background of the Ministry of Education's database, as it was the basis of the impact assessment that we recently conducted.
  • I think it would be more effective if we could hear more details on how to specifically utilize the various tools and support systems, and how they relate to the SDGs and ESGs.
  • However, I am not sure how to use all of them, so it would be more helpful to have a cross-sectional guide (e.g., the Ministry of the Environment's is especially good for this, the Ministry of Education's is good for this, etc.) and cross-sectional information such as which is the latest model.

  • I thought it would be helpful to have more industry-specific materials for each ministry sector.
  • I was not aware of any such TCFD efforts by the ministries.
  • This was helpful in working on the second round of scenario analysis. It is difficult to find data, but I will refer to the materials presented.
  • I feel that if you could provide us with the direction and roadmap for future measures, we would be able to further understand.

  • I was able to learn more about the company's specific initiatives and analysis process in detail.
  • Each company was able to integrate risks and opportunities with their own business, which was very helpful.
  • There are many things that I would like to incorporate in my company such as directions, etc., and this was very useful.
  • I think that agriculture, infrastructure, and finance are industries where climate change risks are easily visible. Next, I would like to know more about the efforts of industries that are not directly affected by climate change, such as manufacturing and IT.
  • This time, you introduced the initiatives of large companies, so if there is an opportunity to share the initiatives of small and medium-sized companies, I would love to participate.
