Future-proofing Water Management Facilities against Changes in Water Level

Publication date July 25, 2018
Sector Natural Disasters and Coastal Areas
Region name Nationwide

Adaptation activity

The functioning and safety of river management facilities maybe affected if there are increases in external pressure, which may be caused by sea-level rises associated with climate change. In response to this issue, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has developed a design concept, and specific measures, to ensure that river management facilities can be upgraded without being completely rebuilt. This includes, for example, making it as easy as possible to retrofit sluice and flood gates to cope with future rises in sea level, and designing foundations and support pillars that will be easy to maintain.
