Reducing Apple Sunburn with Gauze Nets

Publication date July 25, 2018
Sector Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries
Region name Chubu(Nagano Prefecture)

Adaptation activity

Extremely warm temperatures in summer (when apple fruit color), and direct sunlight can cause the skin of apples to turn white, orange or brown, and in severe cases also damage the flesh, reducing its commercial value. This is called apple sunburn, and there is concern that this will increase as global warming progresses. Protective gauze nets are being used in Nagano Prefecture to regulate exposure to sunlight and help reduce instances of sunburn.
