National Adaptation Strategies and Plans:
sharing experiences and discussing actual challenges opportunities
Countries around the world are making efforts to formulate adaptation strategies and plans. In Europe, for example, the European Commission mandated the formulation by 2017. The purpose of this session was to extract lessons learned and learn each other based on the case studies of each country. The session was planned and held last year by Kim Van Newar, strategic advisor to the Dutch NPO Climate Change Services (CAS) and Roger Street, honorary assistant researcher at the UK Climate Change Adaptation Program (UKCIP)/Oxford University, who was also attending an international symposium commemorating the enactment of the Climate Change Adaptation Act.
The case studies in the Netherlands, Austria, and Japan were presented, and from Japan, Vice-Centre Chief of the Adaptation Center explained the development of an adaptation plan in Japan, the launch of a A-PLAT, the enforcement of the adaptation law, and the installation of an adaptation center. Prof. Roger also gave examples in the UK on prioritization in the items of national adaptation plans and indicated the importance of considering the high need for countermeasures and the magnitude of present or future risks and opportunities for each sector.
The event was held in a large-scale room even within the venue, and more than 100 people gathered to demonstrate the high level of interest.
